Hello, friends!
Can you believe Mother’s Day is just around the corner? It feels like just yesterday we were picking out fabrics for spring quilts, and now it’s time to celebrate the wonderful women who inspire us every day. Whether you’re celebrating your own mom, a grandmother, a sister, or a dear friend, there is something so incredibly special about a handmade gift. It’s not just a "thing", it’s a piece of your heart wrapped up in fabric and thread!
If you’re a beginner and the thought of making a full quilt in two weeks makes your heart race, don't you worry! I am so thrilled to share that you don't need a month of Sundays to create something beautiful. I’ve pulled together a list of 15 easy sewing projects that are perfect for DIY craft projects and can be finished in just a few hours.
Are you ready to clear off your cutting table and get creative? Let’s dive in!
Why Handmade Gifts are the Best
I always say that the best part of being a maker is the look on someone's face when they realize you made that for them. It shows you took the time to think about their favorite colors, their style, and their needs. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to build your confidence if you're just starting your sewing journey.

15 Beginner-Friendly Sewing Projects for Mom
1. The Classic Reusable Tote Bag
Every mom needs a reliable tote! Whether she’s heading to the farmer's market or carrying her latest library haul, a sturdy tote bag is a must. You can even personalize it with some fun embroidery using one of the machines in my studio, like my Tula Pink edition Bernina with polka dots or my Brother embroidery machine.
- Pro Tip: Use a heavier canvas or denim for the bottom to give it extra durability!
2. Luxury Lavender Eye Pillows
If Mom needs a little "me time," these eye pillows are a total game-changer. Simply sew a small rectangle, fill it with flax seeds and dried lavender, and stitch it closed. They are so satisfying to make and smell heavenly!
3. Folded Fabric Coasters
These are one of my absolute favorite diy craft projects. They use up those beautiful fabric scraps you can’t bear to throw away. They are quick, practical, and look like you spent hours on them.

4. Simple Zipper Pouch
Don't let zippers scare you! Once you conquer your first zipper pouch, you'll feel like a sewing superhero. These are perfect for holding makeup, pens, or even quilting notions. Check out some of my favorite tools for zippers in our National Zipper Day guide.
5. Quilted Fabric Bookmarks
For the mom who always has a book in her hand, a quilted bookmark is a sweet, thoughtful touch. It’s also a great way to practice your top-stitching or try out a new decorative stitch on your machine.
6. Padded Pot Holders
You can never have too many pot holders! Use some pretty floral prints and heat-resistant batting to create a kitchen accessory that is as functional as it is beautiful.
7. Pocket Tissue Holders
This is a "15-minute miracle" project. It’s literally two rectangles of fabric folded and stitched. They are so handy for keeping in a purse, and Mom will think of you every time she reaches for one.
8. An Embellished Tea Towel
Take a plain linen tea towel and add a strip of your favorite quilting fabric to the bottom. It’s a fast way to brighten up a kitchen and makes a lovely gift when paired with a new cookbook or a set of wooden spoons.
9. A Floral Infinity Scarf
Lightweight cotton or voile makes for a stunning infinity scarf. This is a very forgiving project for beginners because the "loop" hides most of the seams!
10. Fabric Journal Cover
Help Mom keep her notes and dreams in one beautiful place. These covers are adjustable and can be made to fit any standard notebook.
11. Heart-Shaped Sachets
Fill these with cedar or lavender to keep Mom’s linen closet smelling fresh. They are so cute and make great "add-on" gifts to tuck into a card.

12. Japanese Knot Bag
This unique bag style has one handle longer than the other. You loop the long one through the short one to close it. It’s modern, chic, and surprisingly easy to construct!
13. A Simple Garden Apron
If your mom has a green thumb, a half-apron with big pockets for seeds and gloves is the perfect companion. It’s a straight-line sewing project that builds great muscle memory for beginners.
14. Luxury Sleep Mask
Give the gift of a good night's rest! Use a soft silk or high-quality cotton on the back for a gentle feel against the skin.
15. Fabric Nesting Trays
These are great for catching keys, jewelry, or even sewing clips! They add a pop of color to any dresser or nightstand and are a fun way to experiment with stabilizers.

When I’m trying to get through a list of gifts, I rely heavily on my AccuQuilt fabric cutting system. It saves so much time on the cutting phase so I can get straight to the fun part, the sewing!
