QUILTING EDGE TO EDGE ON YOUR EMBROIDERY MACHINE PART 1

QUILTING EDGE TO EDGE WITH YOUR EMBROIDERY MACHINE PART 1

SCRAPTASTIC SCRAP QUILT

QUILTING EDGE TO EDGE WITH YOUR EMBROIDERY MACHINE

Have you ever wondered if you could quilt on your embroidery machine? The answer is, yes. In this tutorial I walk you through the process of getting your Scraptastic Scrap Quilt prepared for quilting on the embroidery machine. I will be working on my Brother 8500D and I am using a 9.5″ x 14″ hoop. I am also using Madeira polyester thread 40 wt. Quilting edge to edge on your embroidery machine is fun and comes out looking like you sent your quilt to the long armer. In this quilting edge to edge tutorial, I am using the Gnome pattern from Designs by JuJu.

You can purchase that design by visiting their website here: 👇

While quilting with my embroidery machine, I share my thoughts on hooping and as you will see towards the end, seam ripping. Unfortunately, seam ripping is a part of a quilters life and it is no different when free motion quilting, straight line quilting or quilting on your embroidery machine. This is part 1 of a 2 part video.

PREPARING THE QUILT FOR QUILTING

Scraptastic Scrap Quilt #9

Preparing the Scraptastic Scrap for Quilting: In this video I do a quick finish up on the border of our Scraptastic Scrap Quilt. Now that the quilt is complete, both front and back, we are reading to begin the quilting process. Whether you will be straight-line quilting, free motion quilting, long arm quilting or using your embroidery machine to quilt, you will need to first prepare your quilt for quilting. In this video you will see me using Pellon 90/10 Cotton batting. I really like this batting and have several rolls of it. I am also using 505 Spray to hold the layers of my quilt sandwich together. I like to lay my quilt top on a table. You can use the floor or the wall if you find that to be easier. The method that works best is the one that fits your style best. I use clamps to hold my quilt in place. I purchase these clamps at Harbor, Tool and Freight. Preparing the quilt for quilting is time consuming and necessary. If I can give you one tip, it is not to start your quilt sandwich if you are in a rush. Do it when you have some time. You will find that the process will be much more enjoyable.

PUTTING THE BLOCKS TOGETHER AND ADDING A DESIGN TO THE CENTER

This week we begin sewing the blocks together to complete a row.

We also bordered our rows with our strips on both the top, bottom and sides of our row. Once you have completed sewing the borders around the block, you can then join the rows together. You will have your top row done and your bottom row done. The center is all that will be left to focus on.

For the center, I used a 1 yard piece of fabric. I used the length of 36 inches and cut the width at 12”, which is the measurement of the center of my quilt backing.

Cutting Instructions:

For the middle strip-

Cut one piece of fabric 12” W x 44” L or if your fabric is less than 44” Long, you can do what I did.

Cut one piece of fabric 12” W x 36” L

Pinwheels:

Cut – 3 – 4” pieces of contrasting fabric

Cut – 3 – 4” pieces from your scraps

Put one scrap square and one contrasting colored square, right sides facing each other. Sew all around the square using a 1/4” seam allowance.

Once finished, cut the square diagonally in both directions, making an X. Press the seams open, cut of the dog ears and then lay out your pinwheel pattern.

Sew the pieces together and square up your pinwheel to 4”. For detailed instructions on how to make the pinwheel from start to finish, watch the full tutorial listed below in this blog post.
