PINWHEEL

QUILT BLOCK OF TH MONTH #9: PINWHEEL

The block of the month for September 2020 is the pinwheel. This is one of my favorite blocks for so many reasons. It looks like a really difficult block to make and yet it’s fairy easy. I say fairly easy, because getting the points to line up in the center can be a bit tricky, but with a little bit of practice and nesting your seams together, the block comes together very nicely. I have made many quilts with pinwheels and I never get tired of them. Pinwheels are fun to make and they look great on the front of the quilt as a main design choice, border choice or even on the back of the quilt if you trying to use up scraps. CUTTING: Cut 2 pieces of fabric right sides facing each other at 14.5″ X 14.5″

This will give you 2 – 13″ X 13″ finished blocks.

Drunkards Path Pattern

 

Quilt block of the month #7:

Drunkards Path. This month we are making a Drunkards Path Quilt Pattern. You can make many beautiful designs with the is block and I find that this pattern looks difficult, but in reality, it’s very doable. I have made a wall hanging using the Drunkards Path Block. It is a great project for scraps or Fat Quarters that you may have laying around that you’d like to use up. The Drunkards Path block is one of my favorites. It only takes 2 fat quarters to cut all of your pieces for the block. I also had a left over fabric that could be used to piece a border or binding if you wanted to add even more character to your Drunkards Path quilt.

QUILTING WITH RULERS

USING A DOMESTIC SEWING MACHINE

Quilting with rulers on a domestic sewing machine is a lot of fun. I will also be using the Quilt as you go method to put the quilt together. This is the Sawtooth Star quilt that we started during the sew along, months ago. I am finally getting around to finishing it and the first step is quilting the blocks. I have decided to quilt the blocks using rulers on my domestic sewing machine.

If you are interested in quilting with rulers on your domestic sewing machine, you will need to do some research to see if your sewing machine supports it.

I sure am enjoying this method of quilting! I highly recommend quilting with rulers. Be sure to practice first on practice quilt sandwiches. Enjoy!

Jacob’s Ladder Quilt Block of the Month #6

This month we are making the Jacob’s Ladder Quilt Pattern. You can make several designs and variations with the Jacob’s Ladder Pattern.  This block was one of the easiest I have done by far. It takes very little fabric, only 2 fat quarters, and I still had fabric left over. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. I also put a picture of the quilt blocks on my quilt wall so you can see what the progress is of our sampler quilt so far. I’m getting really excited to see how cool this is going to look.

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:

2- 5″ Squares of Your Light Fabric

2- 5″ Squares of Your Dark Fabric

2 – 2 1/2″ x 15″ Strips of Light Fabric

2 – 2 1/2″ x 15″ Strips of Dark Fabric

FINISHED BLOCK SIZE IS:

NO CUTTING BLOCKS

Easy rag quilt rag, no cutting blocks. I was asked if you could make a bag using the rag quilt method without cutting any blocks. It’s the same method that we used when we made the rag quilts without cutting blocks.

For this project, I used 100% cotton for all of my fabric pieces.

For this rag quilt bag tutorial I used:

4 – 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ squares. 2 pieces were for the main fabric and 2 were for the lining of the bag and also served as contrast in the fringe.

I also cut 2 – 2 1/2″ strips for the handles.

There are 2 different types of rag bags in this tutorial and I also show you how to make both types. My thoughts on the bags. This is a fun project. You do have to cut your fabric a bit bigger if you want the bag bigger. You lose a lot of fabric using this method for a bag. If you are looking to make a larger bag, I would definitely cut the squares MUCH bigger and I would also add a snap or some velcro to close the bag. I would also recommend putting some batting in the handles just to provide a little cushion and stability to them.

If you would like your bag to have more fringing, just sew a few more pleats and then fringe it.  The bag will become increasingly more fringy.  Just remember that you will lose more size in your bag, so make sure you plan ahead for that.

This project is fun and easy to make.  It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish and the best part is that it helps to keep those pesky remote controls all in one place.  This project is fan inspired and I hope you all like it.  Here is what you will need in order to complete this project.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

3- 11 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ Pieces of Fabric

1- 11 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ Piece of Batting

2- 2 1/2″ x 5″ Pieces of Fabric for the Strap or Just one Piece at 2 1/2″ x 10″

Thread

Rotary Cutter

Scissors

Cutting Mat

Pins or Quilting Clips

Ruler

Pencil or Something to Mark Fabric

Iron for Pressing

Sewing Machine
